Classification of surgical consumables for anorectal surgery

2025-11-07

There are numerous types of surgical consumables in the anorectal department. According to their uses and characteristics, they can be classified into the following major categories:

Basic surgical instrument consumables

This includes basic surgical instruments such as hemostatic forceps, tissue forceps, needle holders, and scissors. These consumables are essential tools for anorectal surgeries, used for basic operations such as tissue separation, hemostasis, and suturing.

The materials are mostly stainless steel. Some are for single use only, while others can be sterilized and reused. For reused instruments, strict disinfection procedures must be followed to prevent cross-infection.

Specialized therapeutic consumables

Stapler types: such as tubular digestive tract staplers, upper hemorrhoid mucosal circumferential staplers (PPH staplers), etc., are widely used in surgeries for hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, rectal protrusion, etc. Its core function is to achieve tissue anastomosis through titanium nails or sutures, which has the advantages of small trauma, good hemostasis effect and short operation time.

Ligation devices: including rubber ring ligation devices, ligation forceps, etc., are mainly used for the ligation treatment of internal hemorrhoids. Through ligation or ligation, the hemorrhoids become ischemic, necrotic and fall off. The operation is simple and suitable for patients with mild to moderate internal hemorrhoids.

Drainage consumables: such as silicone drainage tubes, drainage strips, etc., are used to discharge the bleeding and exudate from the wound surface after surgery, prevent infection and hematoma formation. Different specifications of drainage consumables should be selected according to the size and location of the wound.

Auxiliary consumables

Antibacterial and anti-adhesion materials: such as medical sodium hyaluronate gel, chitosan, etc., when applied to surgical wounds, can reduce the risk of tissue adhesion and also have certain antibacterial effects, promoting wound healing.

Hemostatic materials: including absorbable gelatin sponge, hemostatic gauze, thrombin, etc., are used to deal with tiny bleeding points during surgery. Absorbable materials do not need to be removed a second time, reducing the patient's pain.

Protective consumables: such as surgical gloves, sterile surgical gowns, drapes, etc., are used to ensure a sterile environment during the surgical process and protect medical staff and patients.

Postoperative care consumables

Such as stoma bags, perianal care pads, medical iodophor cotton swabs, etc. Stoma bags are suitable for patients undergoing enterostomy surgery and are used to collect feces. The appropriate model should be selected based on the size of the stoma and the patient's body type. Perianal care pads are used to keep the perianal area clean and dry after surgery and prevent infection.

Ii. Principles for Selecting Consumables

Suitable surgical types: Different surgeries have significant differences in the demand for consumables. For instance, PPH surgery requires the use of a dedicated mucosal anastomosis device for the upper hemorrhoids, while traditional hemorrhoidectomy mainly relies on basic surgical instruments and ligation devices.

Ensure patient safety: Give priority to choosing consumables with medical device registration certificates and qualified quality, and avoid using inferior products. For patients with allergic constitutions, it is necessary to pay attention to the material of consumables, such as choosing latex-free surgical gloves.

Balance therapeutic effect and economy: Under the premise of ensuring the surgical outcome and patient safety, rationally select consumables with high cost performance to avoid excessive medical treatment and waste of resources.

Meet operational requirements: Based on the operational habits of medical staff and the difficulty of the surgery, select consumables that are easy to operate and have stable performance to improve the efficiency of the surgery.

Iii. Precautions for Use

Strict aseptic operation: All surgical consumables must be checked for intact packaging and within their validity period before use. Aseptic consumables should be used immediately after opening to avoid contamination.

Standardized operation procedures: For specialized therapeutic consumables such as staplers, operations must be strictly carried out in accordance with the instructions to ensure the release of the anastomotic nail and the effect of tissue anastomosis, and to avoid complications such as bleeding and anastomotic leakage caused by improper operation.

Postoperative observation and care: For patients using drainage devices, ostomy bags and other consumables, it is necessary to closely monitor the drainage condition and the usage status of the consumables after the operation, replace the consumables in a timely manner, and do a good job in skin care to prevent complications.

Waste disposal: Disposable surgical consumables should be classified, disinfected and disposed of in accordance with medical waste management regulations after use to prevent environmental pollution and cross-infection.

Iv. Industry Development Trends

Minimally invasive medical consumables have become mainstream: With the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques, the application scope of minimally invasive treatment consumables such as staplers and ligation devices has been continuously expanding. Their designs have been constantly optimized to better fit the human anatomical structure, causing less trauma and faster recovery.

The research and development upgrade of bioabsorbable consumables: Absorbable hemostatic materials, anti-adhesion materials, etc. are constantly being iterated. The materials are safer and the degradation rate is more controllable, which can further reduce postoperative complications and improve the treatment experience of patients.

Intelligent consumables are emerging: Some high-end consumables are beginning to incorporate intelligent technologies, such as drainage devices with pressure monitoring functions, which can provide real-time feedback on the condition of the wound, helping medical staff adjust treatment plans in a timely manner.

The acceleration of domestic substitution: Domestic anorectal surgical consumables enterprises are constantly enhancing their R&D capabilities and production processes. The quality of their products is gradually approaching international standards. Domestic consumables, with the advantage of high cost performance, have seen a continuous increase in their market share.
